I want to use Xubuntu the liteweight version of ubuntu but I am blind. Will the orca screen reader work with xubuntu? Are there keyboard commands for the xubuntu desktop? If orca does not work, can it or will it be made to work? I would like for xubuntu and orca to both work on the live cd and when installed. similar to how ubuntu already works.

Asked by Josh Kennedy

I want to know if the Orca screen reader can be made to work with Xubuntu and if there are keyboard commands for the xubuntu xfce desktop? Also what are the minimum system requirements for the normal ubuntu?

I am totally blind and cannot see the screen--I have no sight at all. So if I am going to use xubuntu the orca screen reader or some screen reader has to be made to work with it. you can email me at <email address hidden> .

i have googled a bit for you because this seemed very interesting. according to some emails in ubuntu-accessibility mailing list, in ubuntu 7.04 feisty fawn, orca did not work very well with XFCE 4.4.0. It ignored the XFCE menus completely. the explanation the XFCE team gave was this:

The primary target platform for Orca is GNOME, which is integrated into
many different operating system distributions. The Orca team is small
and is unable to do testing/integration coverage of all operating system
distributions out there. Instead, we primarily use two platforms:
Ubuntu and Open Solaris.

Orca is a community project, however, and we encourage others to help us
with testing and using Orca on all sorts of platforms. As you gain
experience with XFCE, it would be great if you could include your notes
off the following page: http://live.gnome.org/Orca/DownloadInstall.
