Help on Avermedia Ultra 1500 MCE Ver 2.1.0.41

Asked by jtc on 2008-01-08

Noobie (used QNX in past) trying to set up Avermedia Ultra MCE video capture card (drver version 2.1.0.41) in Ubuntu 7.10. Blank screen when ported to MPlayer . Link (http://mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/AVerMedia_M150-D) indicates that special drivers needed. However this link was for hte Avermedia hardware version 1.0.6.14. The Windows drivers are different for each version, so I assume Ubuntu Drivers would also be different. Have contacted vendor (no response yet) Ububtu recognizes Avermedia card as Haupauge PVR-150 (which it is not) . Card works well in Win XP, but would really like to use it here.

appreciate any thoughts

Hi john,

The driver for your card (cx88-blackbird) seems to be shipped with Ubuntu Gutsy.
Could you post the output of the following two commands (after running them in a terminal) :
dmesg|grep cx88
lspci -nn

jtc (chaplijt) said : #2

Thanks for the quick follow up. I looked a bit more at the windows drivers and the rev 1 drivers are code named blackbird (similar to web link) while the drivers for my card are code named falcon. suspect that is part of the issue. IF true, what is involved in "translating" win XP FALCON drivers to Ubuntu?

here is terminal output (there is also a Haupauge frame grabber installed) that you requested

    Status: Open => Needs information

Fred requested for more information:
No, there is no easy way to translate an XP driver to a linux one.

The linux driver for your card is the CX88 one :

Could you run in a terminal the following command and post the output :

The cx88 driver is not loaded. It's another driver (ivtv) that is loaded : this one handles Haupauge PVR cards.

Could try the following commands in a terminal :
sudo rmmod ivtv
sudo modprobe cx88-blackbird

Post any messages you get.
This will unload ivtv driver and load cx88-blackbird one.

After doing this, run again the previous commands (lsmod and dmesg|grep cx88) and post their output.

PS : I'm in France.

Sorry but it seems that your card is not yet supported by the cx88 driver :-(

Try asking on the v4l mailing list if support for you card is being worked on.
Here is the website of the cx88 driver (which is part a bigger project : V4L) :
http://linuxtv.org/v4lwiki/index.php/Main_Page

And here is the mailing list info :
https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/video4linux-list

Good luck.
