When Ubuntu boots, select Esc for the boot menu (Grub) and select recovery mode. Ubuntu will then boot w/o asking you for a password signed in as root. Type passwd USERNAME and it will reset your password. Let me know if this doesn't work :)

Is there a way we can mark this as answered if the original poster is not responding?

Seems that you are having an issue with marking your support requests as answered. All you have to do go to the tickets page, and example would be this one.

Click on post comment at the bottom and check the box saying that it is answered. :-)

Butnaru, please open a new support ticket rather than reply to an existing one. It makes it very difficult for us to track requests when they are added to existing ones.

Someone stole my computer and placed a password that I cannot figure out once I got it back. I always have to sign on as a secondary user in order to get into Ubuntu. I am not allowed to touch the volume controls or download any programs because I do not have the admin password. I need help, please help me.

Easy one, just read about it. A bit late for the guys above but who knows who stumbles upon this one or has to use it 'cause the good part of the web is blocked for them.

Might not work when you use encryption.

How can i recover my username?
Solution: Get your GRUB to display the boot choices by holding down either ESC or SHIFT. It depends on the version of GRUB
Choose RECOVERY MODE. Choose 'root console' or just root.
Type cd /home/ then ls -a
 It should show all usernames.
Type shutdown -r OR use CTRL+ALT+DEL
