Computer does not wake from suspend at all ubuntu 12.04

Asked by Michael

I have an hp dv7 with radeon mobility 4500 graphics card (resolved graphics card issues already, hdmi sound works, no flicker on startup).

My current problem is two fold.

1. After I suspend, if I hit any key to start (the mouse has no effect) I hear the cpu start up, but no keys are responsive on the key board, the mouse is unresponsive, and the screen does not start at all. No back light, nothing, only a cpu fan noise and some lights on the keyboard on the power key come on. At this point, the only solution I have is a hard reboot by holding the power key down.

2. If I close the laptop lid, it does not suspend correctly at all. cpu remains on and fan running, but if I open the laptop lid back up to resolve, then the previous problem (number 1) happens. Tried to enter password, terminal, ctrl, alt, f1 f7 fetc... you name it! Nothing works

New to Ubuntu. Started using it about a month ago and LOVE it (even with the bugs)!! It has rescued two old laptops in our house and I have renounced windows now! I have, however, some problems with my newer laptop (the hp).

Thank you in advance for your help

I hope that helps. I followed the other link, but the s2both link is broken. What is that and how do I use it? Again, thank you.

I have a work around for now. I will share this in simple terms here (in case someone needs this workaround)

1. I re-enabled hibernate by following instrucions in this link
http://askubuntu.com/questions/94754/how-to-enable-hibernation

2. I clicked on the battery Icon at the top and then opened the sub menu "power settings"

3. On the options labeled "when lid is closed" I selected hibernate (both with power cord and battery).

The result is that when I close my lid without doing anything else, it goes into hibernate. When I open my lid, nothing happens (which is a good thing) Then I simply hit the power key once and the system comes out of hibernation.

This solution prevents the very serious problem that almost happened to me yesterday; My wife walked in and opened and shut my laptop (trying to be a sweat heart and keep things clean) She then left the house for a couple of hours. When I came home, I found my laptop cpu fan running at mad speeds and my computer hot to the touch!! Thankfully nothing was damaged in a noticeable way.

I would still prefer a real solution to the suspend problem, but at least things are livable now and my wife can continue to be a sweat heart without undue duress!

does anyone have an answer for this yet. It would be much appreciated. The hibernate answer only works 80% of the time...

Can you help with this problem?
