hp ubuntu 10.04 cannot get laptop panel brightness

hi
i cannot decrease laptop screen brightness

i added brightness to panel but it says "cannot get laptop panel brightness " and no effect of slider

no effect of function keys to decrease brightness

plz help me my eyes will pop out due to this increased brightness.

What make and model is the system?
Have you considered using Precise? Lucid has less than 6 months support left. Why such an ancient release?
