Cannot login

Asked by NF24

I recently decided to try out KDE alongside Gnome. After deciding that I liked KDE better, I completely uninstalled Gnome. Now the login screen doesn't appear. I get a command prompt with "(computer name) login:" and typing in my username and password brings up a command prompt. Help, please? (Reinstalling is a very, very last resort).

The default Ubuntu login screen (gdm) depends on libraries used by GNOME. When you remove GNOME, you might have also remove you graphical login screen, but don't worry it should be an easy fix.

To get the default graphical login back, you can run the following command:

    sudo apt-get install gdm

But there is an alternative graphical login screen that is more KDE inspired: kdm. It can be install with the following command:

    sudo apt-get install kdm

... and since you prefer KDE over GNOME, you might want to get Kubuntu instead of Ubuntu for your future installations. It is a remake of Ubuntu for KDE lovers :-)
