where is saved which version of ubuntu is installed

Is there any log file or configuration file where it is saved which version of Ubunu one has installed?

E.g: When one starts the system monitor in gnome there is a tab "system" where this version is displayed. In which file is this information saved?

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

cat /etc/issue
