How can I restore dvd playing services on 7.10

Asked by bwallum

Hi

I'm having difficulty playing dvds with totem. vlc player exhibits the same behaviour. The dvd starts, then stops after about 25 seconds.

My system is AMD64 bit. I have used the sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh command and have libdvdcss2 installed.

I also have mplayer installed but can't access it. It appears in Applications>Sound&Video> as Mplayer Movie Player but when I click on it nothing happens on the screen. It has worked before on the same machine until I swopped out a PATA harddrive (with system on) to a SATA hard drive and installed the system from the Ubuntu 7.10 AMD64 Alternative distribution cd.

I have been using Simple Backup to move my files from one harddrive to another. I used the default directories /home/, /var/, /usr/local/, /etc/. I have noticed that some programs are shown as being installed but in fact are not. The solution that has worked with all of these 'non install default' programmes, (that is programmes which are not installed with the default system installation), is to uninstall completely and reinstall. I have done this with Mplayer but still it does not work.

How can I move forward? The goal is to play dvds on my system.

Regards
Bob

Hi:

I wouldn't recomend, backing up a system like you have done.
the /home directory yes, the others??? I don't think so.
Why don't you reinstall the whole system, levaing a partition (a big one) for the home directory, then just copy it.

VLC player has received an update I think. Anyway, Its working fine now with no playback interruption.
