Gutsy 7 10, Wont play Videos & DVD

Asked by bill randell

Just purchased Compaq Laptop C582TU. Don't like vista, so installed Ubuntu 7 .10 and all going nice, except emails with videos and can't play DVD's. I have spent days trying to get it going and every recommended program can't be installed. I am a novice, have a desktop with 7.04 and no problems. I hope the fix is not as confusing as some I have read on the forum?

maybe you should try to install the following (restricted license codecs):

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

and/or these gstreamer packages

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg

You need to have the multiverserepositories active

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Uncomment the multiverse lines
Ctrl+S to save

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

or

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg

You may also need https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu as the ubuntu-restricted-extras package doesn't help with encrypted DVDs. Once it's all set up, you might want to install the VLC media player as it does a really good job with DVDs (you still need the codecs).

sudo apt-get install vlc

See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs for more information.

Oh, one more thing to consider. If you are removing Vista, be sure to document your rejection of the EULA. You can then apply to Compaq for a refund of the cost of Vista. It's a major hassle but no need to pay for something you don't want and aren't using - assuming you are not dual booting. If you already overwrote it, you should still be able to apply for the refund but it may be harder to prove you don't have it. Of course, you could always reinstall it and then reject it. Not sure what's more of a hassle.

Thank you Jim,
I left vista on another partition, will work out what to do about it in future.
I may be old and gray, but sorry, I can't figure out my problem with videos and DVD's, I have tried to follow instructions and I am going silver.

Videos may be due to the bug in Flash. Essentially it says it installs but doesn't. Open Synaptic and remove Flash. Search for flash and remove the one that says flashplugin-nonfree and then download and install this http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10761023/flashplugin-nonfree_9.0.115.0ubuntu2_i386.deb.

DVDs should work fine if you have VLC (works better than the rest in my opinion) and all the necessary codecs as outlined above. If not, can you explain what you installed and what symptoms you have?

I have been able to install the flashplugin as advised, after removing the other. But still can't get any result. I am sure I did not install anything other than Helix player. Because every time I tried to install something that was recommended, eg movie player ect, install was not allowed.
Thank you for your time and effort Jim

When you say install is not allowed, how are you installing and what is the error. You do need provide your password to install and you can't have more than one instance of an install program open. For example, if Synaptic is open and you try to install from a terminal you will get an error. Likewise, if you install from a terminal and don't use sudo and your password it won't work. For example

sudo apt-get install foo

I finally worked it out, though I still can't work out sudo apt get stuff?
I went to Synaptic package manager, Settings, Repositories, switched on all the stuff you can't have in Gutsy Gibbon, then loaded VLC & Gstreamer0.10
and it is working beaut now, but the hair is still silver.
Thanks Jim for your help.
