Installing 7.10 amd64 ubuntu

Asked by C10CKVV0RK

I am trying to install ubuntu on my system. I downloaded the iso, burnt to a cd, and booted with it. i choose the option to run or install ubuntu. it goes to the screen where the bar is going back and forth. does that for a while, then a little bit of the bar comes out of the end and the caps lock blinks and there is a kernel panic. i have tried the "noapic nolapic..." and it seems to be working fine until i get these messages:

VFS: cannot open root device "<null>" or unknown-device(8,1)
please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic-not syncing:VFS:unable to mount root fs

I've only worked with ubuntu once with a boot cd for fixing a part of windows, and i want to start trying with ubuntu. i have a feeling i would like it, but i can't get it installed.
because i don't know very much about it, i am trying to dual boot with windows xp, I realize this may bring cringes on many faces, but i am not ready to completely dismiss windows. any help would be appreciated, but i am new to this so you will have to "spell it out" for me.

Dual booting is absolutely fine, it's a great way to start. The first thing I'd try is Check Integrity option on the CD. Followed by memtest for at least 10 minutes.

the cd integrity test said that i have an error with one file. memtest gives me no errors. should i burn the iso at a slower speed to get it more accurate?

also i should say that the i386 version works fine

Slower speed might help. But also verify the integrity of the iso you downloaded. If you used bittorrent you don't need to do that. I usually verify files in bittorrent cause it can easily repair a little bit of them.

no, i didn't use bit torrent, i just downloaded it straight from the sight.
burning at a different speed did not produce different results

Do the integrity test again (on the new cd). If it fails with the same
error then their is a very good chance your download corrupted for some
reason. Your going to need to redownload it (I suggest using a torrent and
tricking the torrent program to think that the iso you already downloaded is
the one it is trying to download. Then do a check on it using the torrent
program. It should only have to redownload a few megs.

You could also just redownload it the normal way and then verify it's
integrity in windows.

I always download iso's with bittorrent and have never had a problem with corruption. I would recommend giving that a try. Everybody has their favorite bittorrent client but I like utorrent for Windows and Azureus for Linux. http://www.utorrent.com/download.php Here is a link to the Gutsy LiveCD torrent http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/ubuntu-7.10-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent

ok, well, now i have a working version, thanks for the suggestion, but i have one more question. what should i use to partion away from free space from my c drive?

The installer should give you the option. If it doesn't (or you don't trust it) System -> Administration -> Partition Manager or gParted (or similar)

Oh.. and I personally strongly recommend you to defrag windows first. And be CAREFUL if you do it yourself, it can take a LONG time.

i have defraged. the partition manager in ubuntu says that i have a bad sector, i tried the using the --bad-sector switch in the command line, but it says that my permission was denied. any other ideas?

A bad sector on the hard drive? Or the integrity check for the CD failed again?

in the hard drive. i already ran the windows disc scan and it completed without any errors

What program is giving you this error? The install or Gparted? I don't know very much about this, so you might want to open a new question with the specific error you are getting.
