when i install

i know ubuntu gives me the option to shrink windows but will it partition my hard drive at the same time

my hard drive is 40gb but im hoping that i don have to use more than 20gb

20 gb should be plenty (and then some ) to install and run Ubuntu.

When you shrink the Windows partition it does not format it - it leaves the data intact but decreases the amount of space on the hard disk used by Windows.
