first installation

Asked by andy

I have an old Dell PC. P4 256 RAM which is spare and unused.
It runs XP....slowly.

I would like to convert it over to use Linux Ubuntu.

I would then wish to use the computer for e-mail and internet ( Firefox)

I have no technical expertise whatever. All I have ever done is press the on switch and if necessary put a disc in the drive and follow on screen instructions.

Is it possible for me to install and use Ubuntu from a disc in this way. I am quite happy to lose the xp application and just run with Linux if that makes it simpler.

I am aware I am not the first person to ask this question, but answers I have seen always assume a level of technical knowledge and confidence far beyond that of the casual user. I cant even understand the terms, certainly not have the confidence to proceed.

A simple answer would help not only me but the many other novices who would like to try out the system

Thanks

its dead easy to install ubuntu ;) with 256mb ram you *may* want to consider using xubuntu instead of ubuntu, you can do the same stuff its just more appropriate for low ram systems. I used to run normal ubuntu on 256mb ram though :).

you can find all the information you need to install ubuntu here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation

if you find that a little confusing you can also watch a screencast (a video showing you howto do things step by step) made by our screencast team about installing ubuntu here: http://screencasts.ubuntu.com/MoS2007/09_Installing_Ubuntu_Part_1

there is also a screencast about installing xubuntu here: http://screencasts.ubuntu.com/Installing_Xubuntu

I would definitely stear you towards Xubuntu. I have used this to breath life into numerous computers that we had all but written off. The install is tight and it has the exact same package management facilities.

Can you help with this problem?
