I think you can install software in a Live CD enivornment, but it will of course be deleted when you reboot. Your best bet is to run Ubuntu off a USB key. If your laptop can't boot from USB natively, you can try PLoP Bootloader. Burn PLoP on a CD, boot from the CD with your USB key plugged in, and select USB boot from PLoP. Hope it helps!

Karmic is no longer supported in any way. I suggest a clean install of Precise (for LTS support til 2017), or Quantal for the latest release with the latest features but shorter support.

hi again,
first thing I want to thank you, Joakim L. and actionparsnip, for your answers and help!

Joakim: WOW ..how come I didn't come up with that idea! if it worked to boot from usb using such a boot-manager as "Plop Bootloader" my proble would be totally solved! I'd even be able to customize my OS and keep the changes ..booting from cd is just terrible as you certainly know. Thank you, I will come back here after trying and tell you if it worked.

actionparsnip: Yes, you are right! it sure would be better if I updated my OS. but actually I think for the moment I will stick to the old versions. due to my limited technical possibilities I don't use the computer for anything else than browsing(surfing) and chess. next month I'll be getting myself a new desktop and will surely install a new linux with one of the images you mentioned.

thank you guys,
Biester
