what do i need?

will i need to partition the hard drive to run ubuntu or just wipe it clean and install it

The install program will offer you both choices. If you choose the entire disk option it will wipe everything out (back up important stuff or it's gone). Choose the resize option and it will shirk windows and repartition for you. Clean up windows before doing that (defrag and such) or it will take a longer time.
