I cant get volume control or quality sound

It appears that I have only very basic sound or audio capabilities with Ubuntu. In windows I have a full range of sound, bass, treble, volume control, etc. In Ubuntu, (on the same machine) I have low quality of sound, very little volume control. I have installed the various options for audio and sound crontrol, but still have had no luck. Also, I should note that my earphone jack is inoperable in Ubuntu, but again works well in windows.

I like the full range of sound when listening to music or watching a dvd !

I am at a loss and hope someone out there has a solution, or at least can tell me that there exsist some sort of bug that is being worked on.

sorry, i should add, according to the manufactures specs:

"AC '97 compatible stereo sound with 3D sound effects. Built in stereo loudspeakers."

Better you install the alsamixer package if not installed, type at the command
sudo apt-get install alsamixer

Now type at terminal
alsamixer
then select each channel, press the UP button and maximize the volumes in all channels, if you see that pressing the UP key does not have any effect, maybe that channel is muted, just press the M key to unmute it and then try to maximize the channel volume

yesterday a friend of my install to my computer a faster speed in my computer because I was having
problems when I was on AOL that the computer kept freezing on me but now the volume doesn't
work. Could you please help me get the volume to work like it used to work before.

I have the same or similar condition. On a scale of 1 - 10 the volume seems to be at like 4 - even though all controls are are at 100%. My headphone jack works though, which helps, but still. I *did* have more volume in wind0ws. I am running Ubuntu 8.10...
