after the latest update of V7.10, kernel 2.6.22 - 14 the screen showing blank. All functions and icons are missing

After taking the update & installation of Ubuntu 7.10, Kernel 2.6.22-14 I found all the desktop icons are missing, only Prt Scr key in keyboard is functioning, mouse is also inactive. Even nothing could be done in recovery mode. So I had to restart the PC by rest button.
Now my LINUX OS is not available.

When you update the kernel the old kernel should still be available to boot from. I might have misunderstood, though. Perhaps it was not the kernel that you upgraded.
