12.10 NX Remote Desktop

Asked by adam jvok

Upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10.

Using nomachine.com NX for remote desktop.

Both local & remote now 12.10. [was working finr with both on 12.04]

The remote dekstop is displayed on the local client, but it is missing the Laucher and the top bar/menu (with the clock etc).

I recall this being an issue a with earlier versions that was solved by editting the file /usr/NX/etc/node.cfg and setting:

CommandStartGnome "/etc/X11/Xsession 'gnome-session --session=ubuntu-2d'"

.. but in 12.10 we don't seem to have "2d" anymore.

Anyone any ideas for a fix/wrokaround?

Thanks for any help.

2D was removed from Quantal.

What are you connecting to the remote OS to achieve? There may be a sleeker solution.

Thanks

1. Help a remote user when needed, by sharing his desktop.

2. General use of a remote desktop for myself. Usually someelese is logged into that remote machine at the same time, so I rely on NX to give me a separte desktop session from that user.

I'm certainly willing to try alternatives, if they can do both these things.
The first doesn't seem much of a problem (I've seen non-NX ways to do this) but I don't kow have to get the second to work with Ubuntu (well, 12.04 anyway) other than via NX. And now that doesn't work with NX in 12.10 either.

The solution seems to be to install gnome-session-fallback and then change /usr/NX/etc/node.cfg so that:

CommandStartGnome "/etc/gdm/Xsession gnome-session-fallback"

No unity, but it works.
