No sound with external speakers connected to a notebook

Asked by jfd413

I have an HP notebook and logitech 5.1 speakers that work great with my desktop pc. I bought an external Creative 24 bit usb. I plug the speakers into this and connect this to my notebook through a usb port. When i boot with windows vista i have no problems with the sound but when i boot with ubuntu 7.10 i get no external sound , just the crappy noise from my built in altec lansing speakers ( sounds like an am radio that can't quite tune in the station ). Any Suggestions?

Thanks,
Jay

1.you should check system---> preferences--->sound to see if your speakers are already there, just select them and restart any sound applications you might have open. as far as I know you can only have 1 active speaker for each job of your system, so you could have one for multimedia like movies and another for audio conferencing.

2 if its not there, you should probably check the manufacturures website they might have a section for linux which would give you a package you need to use the adapter (the problem probably isnt with the speakers). your looking for a linux debian package for your sound adapter, if you dont find it on their webpage, email them and ask if they have it, if not (they dont deserve your buisness for not supporting an incressingly popular OS and) your out of luck.

3. rebuild your linux kernel to add suport for it, simple, but i've never tried it....

Can you help with this problem?
