Making updates less hassle - 'unselect all' button needed

Asked by Bob Harvey

Just installed dapper from the CD -- it lists 186 updates totalling 207 Mbytes -- on my diallup modem this would take days IF I managed to keep the session up that long. So I need to select which updates are most important. It would be VERY helpful if ALL the updates could be unselected at once, so that I could then chew away at them over a period of time. Thanks otherwise, a great distribution and one I am spreading around to all and sundry ;-).

This is now a feature request, not a bug.

Could you not just let it download them all?
If your line is cut it will carry on where it left off.

Thanks for the responses. Thanks Alan for the helpful point about continuation, which I did not know about, and which makes the process potentially less grievous. I have arranged to hook onto a friend's DSL connection to complete the updates. So Jim, I will have a go at putting it in as a feature request and close this request.

The problem for me is not so much the reliability of the download, but the duration. I get about 3 kilobytes per second, on a good day. If I am lucky, then it will take around 19 or 20 hours. For that period I cannot use my phone for voice calls, I cannot browse the Internet or get email. Horrors!

So what I ask for is some more flexible method of control, bearing in mind the large number of items to be updated. Note that I haven't asked for the updates to be grouped into functional areas and priorities, as is done by Windows, although that would be very useful.

Cheers, Bob.
