Can't turn off login sound

Asked by mike mccarthy

I am a new Ubuntu user. I have 7.10 installed on an HPzx5000 laptop and most things are working OK. I am trying to disable the sound that gets played just before the login screen appears. I have set the Sound Preferences for log in to No Sound but I still get a sound every time I log in after a reboot. Sometimes if I just log out and log back in without a reboot, the sound won't play. However in that case the screen background goes black when I get into the desktop. Also, the sound that plays at login is not the same sound I hear if I do a Test of the Login sound in the Preferences screen. The sound that I get at login is more like a short series of 3 or 4 drum or bongo beats.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

The drum sound is actually an audio event handled by GDM (the Login Manager). You can disable this event by going to System -> Administration -> Login Window. Select the "Accessibility" tab, and un-check the "Login Screen Ready" sound event option.

The Other preferences are for Gnome sound events, after the GDM is finished with the login process.
