New partition wanted but no unallocated space

Asked by David Woods

I need to create a partition on my Ubuntu machine in order to install Windows (to run some Windows software). How do I do it?
I have installed GParted, and the Help instructions I found said to choose a partition that is "unallocated". But I don't have such a partition. When I installed Linux I set up just one big partition for everything (besides the swap partition Linux created for itself). So what do I do now?

A partition to be resized has to be unmounted so you must use the Ubuntu live cd to resize the main ext3 partition to make some unallocate space.

So, boot from Ubuntu 7.10 live install cd open gparted from menu System->Administration->Partition editor select the hard-disk from top right listbox
then select the ext3 partition you want resize
right click with mouse on it and select resize
on new opened window graphic partition click and drag the left arrow with mouse...
....

Hope this help

Thanks marcobra, that makes sense (though I've given the CD away now!)
