Synaptic packages: R-base, R-base-core & related are out of date: version 2.4.0 now available

Asked by S.E.L.

- I would like to download the most recent version of R (2.4.0) from Synaptic manager. Only version 2.2.1 is available.

- I assume this cannot be done until Synaptic manager is updated.

- Is it possible for this to be updated?

Many thanks

As you can see from the following page r-base is at 2.2 in Ubuntu Dapper 6.06, however in Ubuntu Edgy 6.10 (due for release before the end of this month), there is r-base version 2.3.

http://packages.ubuntulinux.org/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=r-base&searchon=names&version=all&release=all

Ubuntu closely follows the Debian releases. In Debian you can see that the current unstable version does indeed have 2.4.

http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=r-base&searchon=names&version=all&release=all

It's unlikely 2.4 will make it into Ubuntu until the next release.

However it may well be possible to gather all the packages from debian unstable and install them on Ubuntu although this is probably somewhat dangerous and may lead to breakage, it's definitely a possibility.
