Can you also provide some additional information about your hardware?
1. Is your external hard drive connected via USB?
2. What file system type has the drive been formatted to? e.g. NTFS? FAT?
And here's some useful commands that will help us determine some facts about your drive, hardware, and file system. Please post the output.
$ sudo lshw -class disk
$ sudo fdisk -l
$ df -h
$ ls -l /media/
If you mount anything to a directory under the /media directory, e.g. /media/usbdisk/, then you will automatically have an icon placed in your Computer windows. These volumes are also placed on your desktop.

Looks like all is well, and the disk simply needs to be mounted so you may interact with it. Typically, you will find it useful to mount your volumes to an empty directory in /media/.
Create an empty directory called "disk2":
$ sudo mkdir /media/disk2
Mount the FAT partition to the new directory:
$ sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdc1 /media/disk2
To set up your FAT partition to be automounted every time you boot, edit the /etc/fstab file, and add the following line:
/dev/sdc1 /media/disk2 vfat defaults,umask=0000 0 0

You are running gedit from within a root shell, but the way you have logged into the root account cannot use the X environment.
Make sure you are logged in as your normal user, and issue "sudo gedit /etc/fstab". This will allow the apps to run. Or you can use a console based editor like nano. e.g. "sudo nano /etc/fstab".
