blank screen when installing 7.10

Asked by d0m

Hi
I've got:-
Mother board; Asus M2N8-VMX
Processor; AMD Sempron 3000+ [ 64 bit ]
RAM 896 MB
Bios Nvidia MCP61

I've been trying to load Ubuntu 7.10 [ 64 bit ] all day!
CD checks as OK, MD5SUM & from flash screen.
It boots; flash screen; I chose 'load' or 'load in safe screen' ; Ubuntu logo plus scanning bar; Ubuntu logo plus building bar; 'blank' screen plus broken music; DVD drive & HHD lights flash for a few mins then 'nothing'!
I've tried:-
F6 + noapic noapic pci=noacpi acpi=off,
Ctrl+Alt+F1 at blank & got 'ubuntu@ubuntu;~$' prompt & typed sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart;
first result;
"Stopping gnom ... [ OK ]
 Starting gnom ... [ Fail ]"
second result;
"Stopping gnom ... [ OK ]
  Starting gnom ... [ OK ]
then a message box appears saying;
  " X server running on display :0
    press Ctrl+Alt+F1 through F7 for a different display
    do you want to start a new server
           [ Yes ] [ No ]"
I've tried 'yes' , 'no' & all the 'F`s' [!] (The F`s just return me to the prompt!)
No use ''''''Blank screen'''''! Help!
Thanks
d0m.

Thanks:
Ctrl+Alt+ '+' worked but I got icons off screen til I realized I could adjust the screen via the 'System' tab at the top of the screen. (Moved screen by moving mouse pointer against side of screen.)
Now it seems to hang at " Configuring apt (80% on bar) Scanning mirror..." ,but I believe all I have to do is leave it 1Hr!
Again thanks
d0m.
