Phantom Python Scripts Running

Asked by Scott Price

I don't know the first thing about Python scripts, or Cron, yet I have Python and Cron scripts running at bootup and while running package installers. I may be sounding paranoid again, but I didn't write any scripts, and I didn't create another user, either. This is a screen print from the Terminal I just noticed when I opened the Adept Manager (a panel menu item):

[sudo] password for scotty:
Error: "/tmp/ksocket-scotty" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.
Error: "/tmp/ksocket-scotty" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.

Now as far as I know, scripts like this don't write themselves. I have a lot to learn here, but how do I stop these scripts from running? The only reason I have Python is because Java said it needed it. Also, my sound card stopped working, I looked at a sound.core(?) file, and every driver in it had "blacklist" preceding the name. How did THAT happen?

I spend every spare moment of my days trying to learn this system, it's a lot to absorb. Once again I would be grateful for some answers to this dilemma...

Thanks,
Scott Price

Thanks for your question.

You should not be concerned about python being installed on your system. Quite a lot of Kubuntu's administrative scripts and System configuration applications are written in python and that would be the scripts that exists on your system.

I believe the problem that is behind the output above is when system application is started with the "wrong" sudo command. You seem to run adept from the terminal with with sudo command. You should use kdesu or kdesudo instead.

Which Kubuntu release are you running?

I hope this helps.

Upon further investigation, I am learning the difference between KDE and Gnome (and KFCE as well). This can be very confusing for the ex-Windows user. Thank you for your help. It is very much appreciated. Now all I have to do is decide which way to go, or not! :-) I was starting to feel safe online again, until I looked at the PCI list :-(.
