slow install

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 7.10 on a Dell Latitude d600, 256k RAM, Pentium 4.
I can get Ubuntu to launch from the live CD, but when I start the installation process it slows down, to a snail's pace. I've gotten past the language question once, and never past the time zone. The CD drive just keeps spinning and spinning without any progress.

Try to see if the CD is damaged by the appropriate control

I had done that, check CD reported everything was fine.
I then installed from the alternate disk and everything has gone fine.
