unable to install ubuntu 7.10

Asked by Milduser

I've just started using linux recently (about 2 months). My first install was openSUSE 10.3. In was rough but managed to get it working as a dual boot on my PC. Tinker with it and i am quite comfortable with it for now.

However, I have heard much about Ubuntu but have not give it a try until ver. 7.10 came along. downloaded a live CD, manage to try it and I'm quite impressed by it and wanted to do an install but until now i'm not successful! (after more that 3 attempts, even using variants Xubauntu). Wanted to give up until I log on to this forum. Hope I may get some help.

My problem starts when the CD (Ubuntu 7.10) installation is stuck at about 82% when the install messege is: configuring get-apt and the lower box message is: scaning mirrors..

waited more than 5 minutes but progress bar not moving.

Check for defect on downloaded CD: no problem.

Please help.

Thanks

You don't have Internet connection, so ubuntu tryes to scan mirrors and don't finding them. Try when installing do not set network configuration ('do it later', or something like that if you're using install CD), or plug off your net wire (maybe, it sounds stupid, but sometimes it works).

This problem persists whether I have internet connection or not. Initially, I tried to install it as it is, that is without internet connection. After a few attempts, I thought it was trying to scan mirror sites, so I activated my ADSL and install as usual. The feared 82% hang mark was still there. What should I do next? Redownload a copy?. It takes hours. I've donwnload a couple of copies but some install are with worst errors. Request a CD from canonical? Takes too long.

Please asist.

Hi Nivus,

It worked! No it does'nt sound stupid to literally unplug the network cable. This is exactly what I did, following your advice after my second post. I some how knew it might work as you suggested.

Just to document down what happened after I did a straight forward install. Just about when the install reached the 82% progress mark, a message screen appeared: " cannot access security update: the security update on 'security.ubuntu.com' could not be accessed, so ..." Press Ok solved the problem. Now I'm using my Ubuntu to post this message.

thanks alot guys. What a great community! My IPS sometimes takes days to solved my ASDL connection. Launchpad solved it in less than 3 hours.

Cheers
