PS/2 Optical Mouse Goes to upper right

Asked by DtotheG

I have a PS/2 Optical Mouse, and it does not work.

I'm working off the Live CD (5.10) (to see if Linux/Ubuntu is for me).

It boots up fine, but when I get to the main screen my mouse cursor doesn't move, however when I Left-click it, the cursor heads to the upper right, and the only thing I can use is the calendar. Please help me with this problem as I can't do anything else.

P.S. Will all my data be DELETED if I feel like making the jump from Windows XP (what I'm posting this on) to Linux/Ubuntu?

What make/model of computer are you using and what make/model of mouse do you have?

Can you please do the following to gather more information. I understand this is tricky without a mouse, but you should be able to do it all with a keyboard.

Press ALT+F1 to bring up the Applications menu, choose Accessories then Terminal.

In the terminal type the following command - it's case sensitive, so make sure you get it right :)

$ grep -A 10 -B 10 mouse /etc/X11/xorg.conf > ~/mouse.txt

$ gedit ~/mouse.txt

In gedit use the cursor keys and shift to highlight the section starting 'Section "InputDevice"' which has the mouse driver in it and copy with CTRL+C.

Open firefox using ALT+F1 to bring up the Applications menu, choose Internet then Firefox. Press CTRL+D to get the Address bar highlighted and type this url in.

Tab until you get to highlight the "Add comment" link, press enter, then paste the contents of the clipboard in with CTRL+V, then tab to "Post Comment" and press enter.

There have also been two other releases of Ubuntu from the 5.10 version, 6.06.1 and 6.10. Have you tried either of these to see if the problem has been fixed in either later version?

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask DtotheG for more information if necessary.
