ubuntu 12.10 unstable live desktop does not work

Asked by Alex on 2012-09-13

I have installed an ubuntu 12.10 beta (I tried both with x86 and amd64) in an usb stick with unetbootin. Turning the computer on works fine, the ubuntu logo works fine but when it gets to the live desktop, the launcher appears, menu bar too but wallpaper is messed up, like strange icons and parts of the launcher. Opening the Dash works fine, launching an app does not work properly too, a shadow can be seen in the desktop but not more than that. Mouse does not work too. Strangenly I tried to start the computer with an external monitor and at that moment both the external monitor and the laptop itself seems to work fine. This is only at the live desktop, I have not tried to install ubuntu 12.10 so far. I currently use ubuntu 12.04 at the moment and everything always worked fine(live desktop worked fine for me too when I installed).
I use Asus x50din series. Intel core duo 2, geforce g102M with an 15,6 inch display.
Thanks for reading my comment. I hope I did not make any mistake. Greetings.

Firstly, lets get the obvious out of the way:

It's a pre-release, what did you expect!!??? It is not ready and not finished, so YES it will be broken in all kinds of places with bugs and feature holes galore. It is not for the lay-user wanting a working OS, it is for people wanting to report bugs and help get the OS ready for release in October. If you need a fully functional OS then I suggest you wipe out Quantal and install Precise.

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?

Alex (yeahsg-n) said : #2

yes, I tested with md5sum. They correlated.
I do not expect it to work properly as a beta. As I said before I have the lts. I apologize in advance if this is not the correct place to comment a non working OS when bug fix is possible.

Have you ran the updates? This is the forum to get fixes and such. I suggest you report a bug too.

LTS is designed to be super stable and packages are more rigorously tested before being published to the repos, so it is a lot more stable. You are now running a non-LTS pre-release so expect a bumpy ride.

No updates are possible and no installation is possible too. This happens at the live desktop where it can be tested if everything works properly before installing. Launcher and menu bar can be seen but not used. Dash can be seen and used. You can launch apps with the dash but only a "shadow" appears on the screen. Installation window cannot be seen too. Trying to turn it off with button appears another "shadow" probably the one for swicht off and restart, but no words, no menu and no proper window is seen.

I use LTS and I commented that trying to install it the same way as I am attemping with 12.10 was working perfectly fine with the LTS. Greetings.

I reported it as a bug with photos which I think makes it clearer.

You can update the live CD desktop but changes will not stay between reboots but you can certainly upgrade the binaries. You are simply restricted in space by how much RAM you have for storage.

Alex (yeahsg-n) said : #7

I do not think I am restricted in amount of RAM. Like I commented on the description of the problem if I boot with a external monitor via VGA all problems fade away and everything works fine in both screens, I even can unplugg the external monitor and it still works perfect. Although I have no Idea it looks like a resolution problem to me.
I know I can update the live cd, what I meant was that doing it graphically was not possible.
I hope I am clear enough. Thanks for trying to help.

Have you tried Xubntu or Kubuntu or Lubuntu?

Alex (yeahsg-n) said : #9

I tried Kubuntu 12.10 beta (x86) aswell with same results. Only with the laptop, graphically unusable, booting with an external monitor at the same time, both screens show graphics perfect.

Can you help with this problem?
