The commands
unity --reset
and/or
unity --replace
might help to get the upper bar back.

If you have lost the icon to access the menu for shutting down or rebooting the system, there are also some other possibilities to shut down the system:

1. a short push on the power button should initiate the shutdown dialogue
2. opening a terminal (ctrl-alt-t) and issuing the shutdown command (with selected parameters)also should perform a clean shutdown:
sudo shutdown -P now # does a poweroff
sudo shutdown -r now # does a reboot
see http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/precise/en/man8/shutdown.8.html

Hello Thomas,

You don't have to go back to an older version of Ubuntu to recover your top panel and your look & feel.

When you log in into the graphical environment, (the screen where you type your password),
Select your name, then before you insert your password, there is a small round icon near the password.

If you click on this icon, you can find the option you need: you can select among "Ubuntu",, "Ubuntu Classic",
"Recovery Console", etc.

If you select "Ubuntu classic" you will find your usual top panel.

Unfortunately this panel will be rather empty, so that, if you want to add elements, for instance for

- quick launch (evolution, firefox, nautilus)
- displays like the clock, calendar, weather forecast (...)
- icons for trash or for "minimize all windows"

... here is what you have to do:

On your keyboard press simultaneously the "Super" key and "Alt" key , keep them down and go
over the panel with the mouse, right-click on it. There you will find a menu to insert elements
in your panel.

One more hint: the "Super" key is the one with a window painted... yes, like MS-Windows logo :-)

Ist das nicht toll? So viel Arbeit für solche Dinge... Ich hab auch lieber die alte Version...
Guten Abend
Enrico

Hi Enrico, I write in german:
Das Rätsel ist gelöst und ich habe meine Icons zurück - unbelieveable, auch das top-menue is back !!
Es ist ganz leicht, nur muß man es wissen. Ca. 30x New Start. O.K.
Vielen vielen Dank- for your help.

Es ist nur noch 1 problem: Wenn ich mich abmelde und ich schließe den Deckel vom Laptop, dann hängt sich alles auf (freezing)
und es sind alles bunte Streifen auf dem Desktop !!
Dann geht nichts mehr !! Was ist da los ??

You can find many posts with freezing computers at log-out. But you see all lines on the screen, then it's maybe not a freese but just a refresh problem.

I thing you could try some keyboard shortcuts to force Ubuntu to do something to refresh the screen. It happened sometimes to me, I never remember the exact shortcut sequence, but then I try alle these:
alt - f4
alt - f8
alt - f10
ctrl - alt f10
... and so on, until something moves :-)

More information on shortcuts here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/KeyboardShortcuts

Tell me if this solves this other problem, but I doubt I can help more because I am a simple user, not a developer.
Have a nice week.
Enrico
