Sony Vaio PCG-FX170 Install Issues

Asked by jace5869

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-FX170 Lapttop and I am currently trying to install Ubuntu/Xubuntu on it (the Gutsy Gibbon) or the other one...
I have read that Red Hat 7.1/2 and Mandrake 8.2/3 will work, but those seem kinda dated and I would like to run a Fedora 5/6 or a 'buntu version.

But my problem is that 1.) Video is properly recognized , I get a 640x480 resolution using a Vesa driver during the LiveCD boot after having to boot into Safe graphics mode using "acpi=off". How can I fix this?

Well, I finally got Xubuntu installed, hopefully it is installed right -- and I can not boot into it, because It goes like it is booting up and I get a blank (black) screen with a blinking cursor.

I've been out of the linux world for a while, and I really miss it --- I've thought about trying Vector Linux (I use to run Red Hat and slack) and trying the alternate install cd for Xubuntu, but I have it installed now -- I just can't get into it.

If I can't get it to work I have others I would like to try : Fedora 5/6, Vector Linux, Debian, SuSe, Freespire -- but I think Ubuntu would be best for me .. B/c I would also like to get my g/f into Linux and away from Windows.

sony Vaio PCG-FX170
512 mb RAM
800Mhz PIII

If you need any type of output or something just let me know and I will try and get it.

Thanks, in advanced!

Have you already tried to pass the same parameter acpi=off into the /boot/grub/menu.lst

Please edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst and add acpi=off to the default kernel parameter

Please open a Terminal pressing CTRL+ALT+F2 after the system is on login with your user and password:

Then install the nano editor:

sudo apt-get install nano

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst, type:

sudo nano /boot/grub/menu.lst

Search the row

# defoptions=........ your options

and add the "acpi=off" parameter

# defoptions=........ your options acpi=off

save and exit

then type:

sudo update-grub

Reboot your pc.

Hope this help

Okay, what I did is when it loaded up I had to hit "e" to edit the kernel mode...and take off the "ro quite splash" b/c I read that alot of sony Vaio's will not boot with that in their, and I also added the "acpi=off" and that fixed it -- I could boot up into a working Linux OS. But I still have a problem -- Video :(

I have the Intel 815, but it is not recognizing anything - and I try to set a cutstom resolution, but it just messes up my screen and I have to reboot. do you know how I can fix this?

When you say to hit Ctrl+Alt+F2 do you mean when I see the boot menu?

Thanks for your help -- I'm feeling much better about this now that I have at least some form of OS to use..

The step i give you are to put on the installed xUbuntu or Ubuntu. To fix your startup issue on the installed system.
