Printing Option Unavailable

Asked by zzzxxx

I have recently installed my new Brother MFC-240c Printer and have managed to get CUPS working after getting packages from the manufactures site.
i have printed test page(s!) and they work, i have printed from happydigger, which i use to hold my database, and it works.

the problem is it wont print from my normal apps, like openoffice, image viewer, gedit, ect.
in the "File" menu the Print option is grayed out, but it does give a print preview :)

either way i had the same problem when connecting to a network printer in another room, printed test pages, and the database info. but nothing else...

help....

Please make sure your cupsd is running...
Open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then check that the cupsys service is on by default at computer startup, go to menu:
System->Administration->Services check the Printer Service (cupsys)

Hope this helps

Please try to add your user to the lpadmin group
Open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo adduser your_user_name lpadmin

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Logoff and logon with your user and please retry.

Hope This helps

Seems your installed printer isn't recognized by the system and from Applications.

Have already tried to install a "generic text printer" or the cups-pdf printer to check cupsys is working with other system defined printers.

To install cups-pdf printer

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get install cups-pdf

Then first try to print to pdf.

If this works try to remove and reinstall the Brother MFC-240c Printer.

Hope this helps
