Canon N650u scanner not seen in Gutsy
I have just installed Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon on my system as a standalone.
According to the docs I have seen thus far, my Canon Canoscan N650u is in fact supported by the latest version of Ubuntu.
In order to edit my files, I did the following:
gksudo nautilus
Went to my /etc/sane.
# enable the next line if you want to allow access through the network:
# net
plustek
Then went into the plustek.conf file
# Plustek-SANE Backend configuration file
# For use with LM9831/2/3 based USB scanners
#
# each device needs at least two lines:
# - [usb] vendor-ID and product-ID
# - device devicename
# i.e. for Plustek (0x07B3) UT12/16/24 (0x0017)
[usb] 0x04a9 0x2206
device /dev/usbscanner
I have also used in the same plustek.conf file the following line:
# For autodetection use
[usb]
device /dev/usbscanner
and finally, in the same file
[usb]
I have made the changes and saved them to the file each time, and rebooted the system. I have also unplugged the USB scanner each time and then plugged it back end. Each time, Xsane does not detect the scanner. Is this because I have an older Canoscan scanner?
Thank you in advance!
Bob

Sometimes there are rights problems. Have you tried to launch xsane as root ?
| Bob Dillon (cruffler03) said : | #2 |
Yes, I tried the following from terminal:
sudo xsane
Then was prompted whether I really wanted to run this from the /root
Xsane starts, and scans for devices, but no devices are found.
Any other ideas I should try?

I suspect that perhaps one of my drivers, or the /sane.d/dll.conf file needs attention?
Even if I go into the device manager, none of my listings show the Canon USB scanner.
Perhaps something also needs to be addressed in the USB detecting devices as well?

Hi Olivier,
I just tried something I had done before, but hadn't given it much thought:
I went to Terminal, then

Imagine that!
I had found that when I ran the scanner off the onboard USB, Ubuntu was able to see the scanner without any problems.
I ran Xscan, and Presto!
Xscan works awesome!
Thanks again!

Glad you made it work !
From the link in the ubuntu wiki, you may need to downgrade sane if your scanner do some strange noise.
