Outlook PST files x Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon

Asked by Mr. Cabana

I am dual booting Linux x Vista here for now and I would like to have my Outlook's PST file to be managed by a program from Linux Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon. Is that possible? Is there any program around to handle these files?

Another problem keeping me from switching definitely to linux is that my home banking requires java for me to type my password (www.bb.com.br), but all I get is a gray box where password field should be displayed.

Any help?

PST files are profiles created by MS Outlook. I guess everything is stored in it: inbox, outboox, draws, notes, personal info, etc.

As for java, yes, the first time i entered the site, i was offered to download/install java and I accepted, but then after installing it, all I see is a gray box where it was supposed to display numbers for me to type my password.

I know Mozilla Thunderbird can manage/import Outlook user profiles to install Mozilla Thunderbird

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get install mozilla-thunderbird

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

For Java please try to check if it is installed.
Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-plugin

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps

Sorry marcobra, but I think I didn't express myself too good.

I tried to say I want to "share" this *.pst file with both a linux application and windows outlook. I'll keep using windows at least for a while.

As for java ... I had already tried what you said, but gave another shot. sun-java6-jre installs with no problems but when i try to install the plugins, i receive the following message:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package sun-java6-plugin is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package sun-java6-plugin has no installation candidate

Then again, bb.com.br shows this gray box instead of a password field.

PS: I already tried going to www.java.com and downloaded their jre-6u3-linux-amd64.bin file, installed it, same effect.

1) To share same folder using Thunderbird for Windows and Thunderbird for Linux
- First install Thunderbird mail on Windows ( i always use it on Windows pc )
To install Thunderbird, get and install it from http://en.www.mozilla.com/en/thunderbird/

On Windows launch Thunderbird and import your data from Outlook. (your Outlook data will be untouched)
Then you can share your mail and setting from Ubuntu and Linux simply setting up Thunderbird to use same user directory: to do this please read

http://ubuntuos.com/?p=96

and/or this

2) Ha! you are on a 64 bit Ubuntu...! please read this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=202537

Hope this helps

Thats all no solution.

Like me, Mr. Cabana wants to use Windows and Ubuntu variously and also share his emails in both OS.

NOT the situation "Oh, I have to boot windows to get emails", because then I will further use windows.
Also NOT: "I use Thunderbird in Ubuntu and get an email there, but now I booted up windows and have to boot in Ubuntu to read it."

The solution: An application in Ubuntu, that also works with PST files. It should open the PST like his own storage files, get new messages and safely save that all into the pst, so that outlook in windows can also open it again.
