Do you know if any upgrades were performed?
Have you checked to make sure the sound isn't muted by mistake?
Is there any possibility that the wire may have come loose between your speakers and your computer?

sudo cp /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.bak
This is just to keep backup, in case sumthng goes wrong.

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
This will open up a file in the text editor.
Append to the end of this file the following line:
options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=3stack

Save and exit. Restart and retry.
