How do I change my graphical settings back to where they were

When I start my PC the picture are so disorted that I can not see what is what.
It happend when i change the Plug & Play screen to LCD 1280 x 768 and rebooted.
I need to get back to the old settings, I gues from some sort of start up prompt.
I am very new to Ubuntu/Linux, please bare in mind.
