quit dialog does not appear

Asked by Kai Schroeder

On one of my systems running gutsy, the quit dialog (showing shutdown, restart, lock, log off, ... options) often does not appear. When I click on quit in the system menu directly after booting the computer, this happens almost always. Without clicking on quit again, the dialog however appears immediately after launching a gnome terminal. Any idea what could cause this problem or how I can debug it? My intention is to collect some further information before I create a bug report.

I could fix this by removing the contents of .config/autostart (rm ~/.config/autostart/*). Some applications have been started twice during the login and I assume there is some race condition lurking here. Will try to get some further info for a bugreport.

For the record: The problem has not been caused by starting applications twice but by disabling evolution alarm notifier and gnome power manager

Please go to system -> preferences -> sessions and see if you have disabled "Power Manager" or "Evolution Alarm Notify". Enabling them might fix your problem after the next reboot

thank you for responding so soon. i tried to do that but cannot open the sessions, whenever i try the lower panel will only indicate that "Starting sessions" then after a few seconds it disappears and nothing happens.

i assume you haven't turned of your computer / rebooted meanwhile? you can try to press "ctrl - alt - backspace" - that restarts the graphical environment (X-Server) and maybe you can shutdown from the login screen.
