Cause of Errors before Login

Asked by Navin Talati

Recently I installed Ubuntu 10.04.4 in an old machine consisting of Pentium III, m512 MB SDRAM and CUSL2(Asus) M.B. When the system is switched on, after routine sensing and memo. checking a black screen comes with following errors:
Error : no suitable mode found
Error: unknown command "terminal"
then a green screen flashes
and then routine login screen appears
and then the o.s. starts after giving login name and password.
What is the reason of appearing this Errors? How to resolve them?
Guidance is requested.

Why such an old release? Lucid has less than 9 months support. If you install a clean install of Precise (12.04) you wll be supported all the way up to 2017.

Sir,
As I have mentioned that mine is an old machine consisting of Pentium III, 512 MB SDRAM and CUSL2(Asus) M.B. Initially I had Ubuntu 9.10. Later on I tried to upgarde it but could not work seamlessly in Ubuntu 11.10. Then I moved downward to Ubuntu 11.04 but Unity did not respond properly. Further moving back I found that Ubuntu 10.04.4 works optimally fine (even 10.10 could also not work as smooth as 10.04.4). This may be due to the least requirement of resources from existing and old too, hardwares and their limitations. If I install UBUNTU 12.04, I afraid it will work ! This is the reason behind selecting UBUNTU 10.04.4 Distro on this machine.
Your comment and guidance will be highly appreciated.

Xubuntu and Lubuntu use fewer resources so will make for a more responsive OS

When the system is switched on, after routine sensing and memo. checking a black screen comes with following errors:
Error : no suitable mode found
Error: unknown command "terminal"
then a green screen flashes
and then routine login screen appears
and then the o.s. starts after giving login name and password.
