partitioning a brand new hdd

i just got a new hard drive. its not even formatted. how do i go about formatting it? i want to install ubuntu on my laptop and i have an idea that just might work, but i want to get this hard drive into FAT32 (or FAT... whichever linux can read AND write)

You can use Gparted to format and partition your new HDD.

what is the code for the file system?

ntfs... vfat... but what is the terminal code for extended3?

If you want to use FAT, then use vfat. Extended is ext3.
