Sounds like you have incorrect video settings for your card or monitor.
Using CTRL+ALT+F1 you can switch to a console. From there you can logon using the name and password you created during the installation.
Once you are logged in you can reconfigure the video system with the following command:-

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

It will ask you what video card you have and a number of other questions. You should observe the screen resolution question carefully and set a resolution you know your display is capable of.

What type of computer and video card is it that you have?

If the keyboard has stopped responding, you should try booting up in single user mode, the second option offered by Grub. That way, you can modify your system, adapt the configurations to your liking, and then reboot and be able to use it.

Hi Alan,
the sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg did the trick and I was able to change the default resolution, as for the keyboard freeze it was resolved when I used a PS2 KB instead of USB one.

many thanks to you and Gabriel for you support.
