Please tell me if you can reach the pseudo-tty (terminal login) by pressing CTRL+ALT+F2 at boot.

Thank you

Please try to update the system and install the get-edid package, make a login with your user and password from terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get --reinstall install read-edid

Hope this helps

Also when the system will ask you for password then give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hello, I hope it's not too late to ask this, but if anyone sees this.....here goes....

I am having the EXACT same problem as described here, and this thread has been very very helpful to me so far. I installed the packages marcobra said and that solved the first problem of getting the EDID. Now I am having the same error
"/etc/gdm/failsafeXServer: Line47:[: too many arguments"

exactly like that, but I can't figure out how to fix it.

I thought I just had to enter how much video RAM I have (64MB) while configuring the xserver because of marcobras last comment, but that didn't work. I don't quite understand what Abhinav did in those last 3 posts but please share with me!!

I just ordered a new cd for ubuntu's site and i installed it. But when i got to know that my graphics card wasn't installed i downloaded the program from nVidia and installed it from root . Then i restarted the computer then again i started to get this error. So i reinstalled ubuntu and started working on it again. I did not bother to install the graphics card agian.

DrKieth

Just order a new ubuntu 8.04 on the 24th of April and try installing it. This may solve Your problem. Just tell me that which graphics card do you have?
