I just installed Ubuntu 7.04 and I need to install the modem (Motorola SM56 V92 PCI Modem). I ran scanModem and the result is presented below. I don’t know what to do after that. Can you help?

MANY THANKS

-------------------------- System information ----------------------------
CPU=i686,
Linux version 2.6.20-15-generic (root@palmer) (gcc version 4.1.2 (Ubuntu 4.1.2-0ubuntu4)) #2 SMP Sun Apr 15 07:36:31 UTC 2007
 scanModem update of: 2007-20-07

 There are no blacklisted modem drivers in /etc/modprobe* files

The Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) packages providing audio support on your System,
also includes drivers for some modems. High Definition Audio (HDA) cards can themselves host
a softmodem chipset, with both audio+modem supported by a snd-hda-intel driver.
The ALSA diagnostics are written during bootup to /proc/asound/ folders.

Summary card and chipset information is in:
/proc/asound/cards:

                      HDA Intel at 0xe9300000 irq 22

There is candidate modem software.

 Completed candidate modem analyses.

 The base of the UDEV device file system is: /dev/.udev

 Versions adequately match for the compiler installed: 4.1.2
             and the compiler used in kernel assembly: 4.1.2

 Minimal compiling resources appear complete:
   make utility - /usr/bin/make
   Compiler version 4.1
   linuc_headers base folder /lib/modules/2.6.20-15-generic/build

 However some compilations and executable functions may need additional files,
 in the FileNames.h (so called kernel "h"eaders) collection installed in /usr/include/ .
 For martian_modem, additional required packages are libc6-dev (and for Debian/Ubuntu, linux-libc-dev). The also required headers of package libc6 are commonly installed by default.

If a driver compilation fails, with message including some lack of some FileName.h (stdio.h for example), then
Some additional kernel-header files need installation to /usr/include. The minimal additional packages are libc6-dev
and any of its dependents, under Ubuntu linux-libc-dev

If an alternate ethernet connection is available,
$ apt-get update
$ apt-get -s install linux-kernel-devel
will install needed pacakage
For Debian/Ubuntu related distributions, run the following command to display the needed package list:

Otherwise packages have to be found through http://packages.ubuntu.com
Once downloaded and transferred into a Linux partition,
they can be installed alltogether with:
$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Checking pppd properties:
                -rwsr-xr-- 1 root dip 269224 2007-04-05 13:41 /usr/sbin/pppd

In case of an "error 17" "serial loopback" problem, see:
    http://phep2.technion.ac.il/linmodems/archive-sixth/msg02637.html

To enable dialout without Root permission do:
                $ su - root (not for Ubuntu)
        sudo chmod a+x /usr/sbin/pppd
or under Ubuntu related Linuxes
                sudo chmod a+x /usr/sbin/pppd

Checking settings of: /etc/ppp/options
asyncmap 0
noauth
crtscts
lock
hide-password
modem
proxyarp
lcp-echo-interval 30
lcp-echo-failure 4

Follow what is said in this howto

Of course you do not need to redo the first part (ie the scanmodem thing), as we are sure from your earlier post that your device is the 3052 device

In the howto page, the build install comand (cd /tmp/ungrab-winmodem-20070505/) returns "No file or directory found". I also tried typing 'make' in the same line (cd /tmp/ungrab-winmodem-20070505/ make), this returned the same error. Is there another way to install the driver?

As you have not done the first part, you downloaded the files in your home directory, and not in /tmp/

therefore, enter

cd ungrab-winmodem-20070505/

and go on with the instructions

"cd" is the command to Change Directory

see for some commands https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal?action=show&redirect=BasicCommands

Thanks Oliver for all your help so far.

Just a few more problems.

Firstly, am I supposed to install both drivers i.e. the winmodem and the slmodem (I have a problem installing the slmodem).

Secondly, when I go to install the sl daemon, and error message "could not find the package sl daemon" comes up. What do I do?

Many thanks

To install the sl-modem-daemon package, you need to add the restricted section of the repositories. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu on how to do that

I believe that the modem has been installed, it is in the hardware information. My problem now is how to connect to the internet. For example in Windows, you go to 'connect to' and then click 'dial'. What do I do with linux?
