TTY Error. Installing Ubuntu 7.04 on MacBook Pro.

Asked by Maikeru

LIVE CD VERSION:

7.04

COMPUTER DETAILS:

Apple MacBook Pro (15.4)
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP31.0070.B05
SMC Version: 1.16f10

PARTITION SETUP:

Partition 1: Macintosh HD, 118.48 GB

~30 GB unpartitioned space

Note: I tried this with a 30GB FAT partition as well.

RESOURCES USED ALREADY:

I tried everything under the "Kernel Parameters" section on this page:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TTYError?highlight=%28tty%29

The other solutions did not apply to my situation, particularly since my MacBook Pro does not have a floppy drive.

Alright, so, I have an Ubuntu Live CD v7.04 that I am trying to install on my MacBook Pro.

I boot from the CD, and the menu comes up fine, giving me the options to start/install Ubuntu, test the memory, check CD for defects, etc.

I select "Start or install Ubuntu"

It loads the linux kernel without difficulty, and I get the Ubuntu loading screen with the bar bouncing back and forth underneath the logo.

After that's done, I get a black screen, and the following error message:

----------

BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-2ubuntu3) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off

----------

In hindsight, I should have checked before posting this to make sure that those numbers all match up, but that, at the very least, is nearly identical to what I am getting, and I don't know what to do about it. Nothing works from the prompt on that screen (and bear in mind that I'm working with next to no knowledge about linux or the terminal commands for it).

I tried the kernel parameters on that webpage above in several different ways, and nothing worked. I'm getting kinda frustrated. I want to dual-boot with Mac OS X and Ubuntu, but I can't get past this!

Can anyone help me?

Hi !

my first piece of advice would be to try the latest version of ubuntu, that you can get here http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Then follow the instructions here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MacBookPro

If your laptop uses a santarosa platform, have a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MacBookPro/SantaRosa

Tell me if you encounter any problem
