can't play youtube videos - i've installed ubuntu-restricted

Asked by jorgosv

hello,
I did a reinstall of ubuntu gutsy, and have a problem i didn't have before - i installed the ubuntu-restricted package but i cannot play videos in youtube. when i click on a video a message appears if to install additional plugins, i click ok and choose the adobe version, but then a message appears, "flashplugin-nonfree is already installed". the vd still doesn't play. in my previous installation of ubuntu gutsy it worked straight after installing ubuntu-restricted and nothing else. what should i do in order to play youtube vds?

as u can see its a bug
do this
i too had this problem

Using Synaptic Package Manager, remove the package flashplugin-nonfree.
Alternatively, you can run this command in the Terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal): sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-nonfree

but before installing it go to system-administration-software sources
u will be prompted for ur passwod, just enter it
a window will appear with many tabs
in the updates tab click the checkbox (1) important security updates
                                                            (2) recomended updates
                                                            (3)pre-realeased updates
then while closing the window a dialog box will appear, u just click the reload button
then go system-administration-update manager if prompted for passwod give it
u will see see updates by now, but click the CHECK button the u will find at the bottom, it will download updates
then after it has finished, click 'install updates', it may take some time
after downloading and installing updates (an automated process) reboot ur system

then download http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10761023/flashplugin-nonfree_9.0.115.0ubuntu2_i386.deb
then install it
 then download http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10761023/flashplugin-nonfree_9.0.115.0ubuntu2_i386.deb
then install it
And u need a working internet connection

This solved my problem, I had gutsy up and working but then had some problems and had to do a reinstall. I have worked for several hours trying to get back to where I was before. This did it for me, I sure appreciate all the time you guys/gals put in to help us newbies.
