Realtek RTL8188CE wireless does not work in Ubuntu 12.04LTS

Asked by William Pritchard

I have a Toshiba Netbook NB510-119 with inbuilt Realtek RTL8188CE card running Windows 7 into which I dual booted Ubuntu 12.04LTS.
I want to use the Ubuntu OS but am still unable to get the Realtek working properly. Both wired and wireless worked out of the box in Windows 7. In Ubuntu the Realtek wireless seems to load, works for a few minutes then I lose the internet connection. After a while Network manager sometimes indicates device not ready and I can only recover by rebooting and using 'sudo modprobe rtl8192ce.' When I open a website I again lose the connection after a few minutes.
When I first started with kernel 3.2.0-24 there was no wired connection either. I downloaded the Atheros AR8162 driver and got it working with alx driver, but still no stable wireles connection. I updated to kernel 3.2.0-25 and promptly lost the wired connection. I used the Atheros driver to get it going again. The latest update was to kernel 3.2.0-26 which again lost my wired connection but I am not using this one because of the hassle in getting it back!
I have borrowed a spare Netgear WG 111v3 usb wireless dongle which works every time without any instability problems based on the rtl8187 driver.
I have downloaded Linux and windows drivers (using Ndiswrapper) from the Realtek web site but neither were successful.
I am disappointed with the failure to resolve this wireless problem and think that it is enough to put off anyone wishing to use Ubuntu 12.04LTS in dual boot.
I am still open to any suggestions but at the moment am at a loss as to how to move forward.
