Music w/o net connection

Asked by Lliam Mckenzie

My modem is not supported by Linux or Ubuntu- I can not get the updates that one should have to get updates and work new software.
I like using Ubuntu but I've got to have my music at least.
 1) How can I get a working mp.3 player download using my windows net connection and
install that onto my Ubuntu system?
2) Any why to get all or some of the updates for new software by down loading thru my windows connection?

Thanks for any help... I went to a lot of trouble to install this and now it's about useless until I get some other modem or find a way to trans load software.

Thank you for your Interest. I have a Gateway winmodem # 7510867, it's called a 56K PCI Voice Modem SF-1156IV R9A Conexant Red Owl modem. The driver is = Red Owl PCI modem driver Version: 2.1.2.171.019. Microsoft(r) Windows(r) 9x for Part Number: 7510867 Date: 06/13/2001. ,And is the same or similar as Gateway part numbers 6001633, 6001681, or 6001260. I am on a dial up net. direct to phone line. My Machine is spare parts built and some parts are kind of old. I run an AMD 751MHz Athlon w/ 384meg mem. A 20 gig hard drive and it part. into 3 drives 1) win xp ; 2) Ubuntu ; 3) swap file for ubuntu. Basicly I would like to access the net using Ubuntu, but would be happy with just a working mp3 player on the Ubuntu system. I did get some file called scanmodem.gz and ran that. Downloaded lots of pdf files for help but all say to hook to the Internet for updates. I hope that is enough info Thanks again for your interest.

After some search, it seems that there is a driver for your modem. get it here

http://ftp.us.dell.com/comm/hsfmodem_7.60.00.06oem_i386.deb

and install it on your ubuntu computer. You should now be able to connect using gnome-ppp that you can get here

http://packages.ubuntu.com/cgi-bin/download.pl?arch=i386&file=pool%2Funiverse%2Fg%2Fgnome-ppp%2Fgnome-ppp_0.3.23-1_i386.deb&md5sum=121507f8cd2b84709231a514b5fb6fde&arch=i386&type=main

Tell me if you encounter any problem

Hello again, I stayed with it for about 3 hours yesterday. I did get the modem driver installed. I ckd my hardware and it is there. Proper name and all. But I have had some problems with the ppp program. I got it to config, but can not get it to make. I read the install text and followed the instructions but nothing. So I think my modem is installed right. I think I downloaded the right programs per your instructions. but I cant or do not know how to compile them. I downloaded gnome-ppp-0.3.23.org.tar.gz.I also downloaded vdial_1.56.tar.gz. I have not tryed to install vdial yet.

You don't need to compile anything. everything needed are already in repositories. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingSoftware

if you installed gnome-ppp, an entry should appear in your menu : launch it

Hello again, I'm sorry but..., I do have my modem installed, but do not have a way to use it. I have read much info that I think pertains to my problem.
I have printed much of the help pages. Synaptic, shows the Gnome-ppp installed & shows Vdial installed, but no link on any menu. The Gnome-ppp
is a tar.gz and the add/remove programs do not find that. Now the modem was a .deb and that worked fine. I went on the tree in /user/bin/ and found Vdial it says it is a executable but nothing happens when I double click or right click, and chose open. Can you try to help me once again?
