already have empty partition

I have windows already installed on my system . I have an empty partition E: where i want to install Ubuntu i tried once but it nearly erased my windows . i have Ubuntu live cd and dont want to partition anything i just want to install Ubuntu on E: without changing anything . can anyone tell me step by step how to do it

Well, linux will never install on an ntfs partition, perhaps a fat32 but I wouldn't to that. I can you please give me more information about why you want to have it installed precisely that way. Then I can perhaps give you a custom solution (you can do lots of things with partitions ;))

Now i have installed ubuntu but windows is on another drive AND i cant rename that drive so that i can reinstall wndows ( have successfully installed ubuntu) but now i cant get into windows

Is windows in your boot menu ?
The boot menu is the menu that opens up when you start you computer that gives you the choice to which operating system you want to boot (sometimes you have to pres escape to make it open)

the boot menu appears for such a short time ( about 1 second ) that i cant tell
