ubuntu wont load on a ibm 1400I laptop

While loading ubuntu on a series I IBM laptop 1400 256 Meg of ram 4.5 gig drive clean load no operating system. The load process locks up while detecting the cd rom hardware. I have loaded red hat 6.2 on this laptop many years ago and I just loaded suse 6.4 today and it loads fine. I am just getting back into Linux and I would really like to use ubuntu. Thanks in advance.

Mmmm... Maybe a bad CD? Have you tried with only one copy of Ubuntu?

The OS Ubuntu starts to load then I recive a screen that says it can not access the tty: job control turned off.
