Remove old versions before installing newer?

Asked by Dick Metzger

I would like to install the latest version of Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) but am presently using an older version (7.04). Should I uninstall the old first, then install the new, or can I simply install the new over the old without having to remove the older version? If I need to uninstall, then re-install, I would like specific instructions on how to do so! Many Thanks: Dick

You don't need to uninstall it. You may do a clean install by formatting the partition and installing everything again if you want but you don't need to do it. Just put the cd on the drive and ubuntu will recognize it is a new version. Open the package manager and let it do the rest.

Thank you very much for your prompt reply. I will install the new version over the old then as you suggest!
