Internet wont connect.

Asked by steeltwist

I've just dualbooted ubuntu and xp. My internet works on xp but not on ubuntu. I've used the forums to try different things but nothing worked. If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this problem, it would be greatly appreciated.

How is your Internet connection configured in Windows XP?

Yes -- specifically, if you had to do anything in Windows XP beyond just plugging it into the modem/router/whatever, you will have to do the same sort of configuration in Ubuntu.

Can you give me a detailed list of the steps you ahve already performed in Ubuntu? Please do not include any personally identifying information (usernames, passwords, that sort of thing).

Um..lets see..i've turned IPV6 off, i've done sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart, i've turned roaming off and selected DHCP (someone on forums told me thats what i use when i posted some info), i did the sudo pppoeconf thing which didnt work (i'll explain in a sec), and i checked to see if the pppoeconf package was installed.

I followed the instructions from here -> https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ADSLPPPoE. When i did the "Configuring PPPoE with the command line", i got a message saying something about access concentrator of provider didnt respond. I couldnt go any further.

Hmmm... my "solution" to dealing with PPPoE for ADSL has always been to either have a local router do it for me or to have the modem itself do it.

Who is your ISP?

Teleclipse. So theres pretty much nothing i can do? Should i call someone out here to check it out? Not sure if they would know anything about linux though lol. It stumps me seeing as how xp is on the same comp and its connected to the internet.

Oh, there is plenty to try, and calling your ISP and asking them exactly what is needed to get Ubuntu working with their DSL connection is one of them -- you may get a smart and/or interested agent. A quick Google search did not yield any references to others having problems, so calling Teleclipse and asking them what what configuration parameters you need is probably the first thing to try.

On Windows XP, though, what PPPoE client are you using, and how is it configured? (again, no personally identifying information, please)

Hmmm... it sounds like you did not configure your settings in XP, either.

What, (if anything) do you ahve to do to get Windows XP on the Internet after restarting your computer?

In Windows XP, what all network connections does it show? http://support.hubris.net/configuration/xp/network_xp.html will show you how to get to the network connections.
